Wet Basements After Heavy Rain
With rain arriving year-round, many Knoxville basements take on water during heavy storms. A little detective work tells you whether it's a gutter, a crack or rising groundwater.
Request a foundation inspectionSafety first
If water is deep or near outlets, stay out and turn off power to the area if it's safe to do so.
Where is it coming in?
Note whether water enters at a crack, the floor-wall joint, a window well or through the floor.
Check outside
Overflowing gutters and downspouts emptying near the wall are the most common causes.
Sump pumps
Test your sump pump before storm season. A backup pump or battery helps during power outages.
Dry it out
Remove wet carpet and boxes and run fans and a dehumidifier to prevent mold.
Photos
Take photos of where water entered. They help a contractor diagnose the problem.
Long-term fixes
Drainage, crack sealing, interior drains and exterior waterproofing are all options.
Insurance
Check your policy; flood and seepage are often treated differently.
