Mascot is a community in northeastern Knox County with 2,760 people at the 2020 census, up from 2,411 in 2010, near the Holston River.
What that means for your foundation
Mascot grew as a mining community, and many homes date from the 20th century, often on crawl spaces with older supports. Sagging floors and sticking doors are common signs of settling; see house leveling. Mining history means some areas have disturbed ground, and an inspection is worthwhile before buying an older home.
Older supports
Original block or stone piers in older homes can sink or shift. Adding new footings and adjustable posts can restore support. Homes near the Holston River bottoms deal with wetter soil and damp crawl spaces.
A zinc mining town
Settlement dates to about 1796, when John Erwin bought 150 acres, and early life centered on Saylor's Ford across the Holston. Dr. George Arnold built the Georgian-style house Chesterfield along Old Rutledge Pike in 1838, now on the National Register of Historic Places. A railroad came through in 1884, and in 1906 the Holston Zinc Company opened a mine that made Mascot a company town; the name may come from the Mining and Smelting Company of Tennessee. Older homes from those years can benefit from a careful inspection; see foundation inspections.
