Wild strawberries

Adam Meek, a pioneer from North Carolina, settled here in 1785 after first living in nearby Rocky Valley, making it the first settlement in newly formed Jefferson County. The community is said to be named for the wild strawberries that grew in abundance, and in 1808 William Williams bought 1,200 acres and began farming them.
